WAYNE PAYTON SMITH
Wayne Payton
Smith is the columnist of MEDICINE
& YOU, a nationally
circulated health column designed to
provide practical, up-to-date medical
tips for the African American
community.
Dr. Smith received his Bachelor of
Science Degree in Biology from North
Carolina Agricultural and Technical
State University in the School of Arts
and Sciences in 1980 and his Doctor of
Pharmacy Degree from the Campbell
University School of Pharmacy in 1990.
He is a member of the North Carolina
Association of Pharmacists, National
Pharmaceutical Association, Kappa Psi
Pharmaceutical Fraternity, American
Society of Hospital Pharmacists, and
the National Association of Black
Journalists. Smith has served in
several elected positions including
Vice-President of the National
Pharmaceutical Association-NC
Delegation and chairperson of
continuing education. He has also held
faculty and research positions at both
North Carolina Central University
Department of Nursing and East
Carolina University School of
Medicine.
Smith
has been actively involved in
advancing pharmacy practice throughout
his career. He has given numerous
professional presentations to a wide
variety of health professionals and to
the general public on a broad spectrum
of topics. Dr. Smith has also
co-authored several peer-reviewed
research articles in immunology and
pharmacology.
In 2004 and 2005, Smith worked as a
consultant pharmacist with the United
States Public Health Service at
Northern Navajo Medical Center in
western New Mexico where he provided
disease state management to patients
with chronic diseases such as
hypertension and diabetes. He has
practiced in a variety of settings
including retail pharmacy and long
term care dispensing in West Virginia,
South Carolina, and North Carolina.
Dr. Smith has been a clinical
pharmacist at Tuba City Regional
Healthcare Center in northern Arizona
since 2006.
